F Hoff Hawk

(click picture for more...)

This hawk was closely inspired by a presentation hawk built by Peter Angstadt circa 1810.  The original apparently honored a gentleman by the name of F Hoff.  This hawk started life as a forged hammer poll hawk.   The head was filed smooth for engraving and the molding details were filed in.  The hammer poll was removed and the pipe bowl was turned and threaded for attachment.  The engraving design of the original was faithfully reproduced on the copy.  The pipe bowl was carefully and laboriously file finished into the diamond faceted design of the original.   The tightly striped curly maple haft is inlayed with inlays designed and engraved the same as the original.   A removable threaded antler  mouth piece and clean out are fitted to the fully drilled haft.   This is a true collector piece.
